Lecture on Japanese Diseases (Fall 2006)

Outline

Attempts to uncover the causes of the poor performances of the Japanese economy-society during the 1990's and thereafter (the Japanese diseases) in comparison with the good performance from the 1950's to 1980's. Will focus particularly on the structure and the functioning of organizations comprising the Japanese economy-society such as the state and local governments, industrial firms, and schools-universities. To find out the causes of Japanese diseases, the course will emphasize not only statistical and other observable data, but also deep-rooted factors such as the way people communicate each other and make collective decisions. Students are invited to conduct some research by comparing Japan with their home countries in regard to economic and other performances.
