Editor's Note and Introduction (Toru Nakagawa, Apr. 4, 2015)

It is our pleasure to post Mr. Toshio Takahara's paper here after an interval of 2 years.  I missed having any chance of seeing him since 7th Japan TRIZ Symposium in Sept. 2011, because he received heart surgery in 2012 and had a pace maker installed in 2013.  Last January when I visited Tottori University Medical School for giving a lecture , he came and joined me on the train from Okayama to Yonago, Tottori, to have a happy communication time for 2 hours.  I was very glad to see him having recovered very well.   At that time he gave me 4 papers which he presented at conferences in 2013 and 2014, including this paper.  (He also showed me a manuscript of another new paper.)

As longtime readers might remember, the present site has been honored to post "Collections of Papers Written by Toshio Takahara", in 2 volumes so far written since 2003:

"Theory of Resolving Differences", A Collection of Papers Written by Toshio Takahara (2003-2007), containing 14 papers, posted on Mar. 30, 2008

"Theory of Resolving Differences (2)", The Second Collection of Papers Written by Toshio Takahara (2008-2012), containing 13 papers, posted on Mar. 7, 2013

"A Note on Movement and Contradiction in Technology and Institution", Toshio TAKAHARA, TRIZ Home Page in Japan, Aug. 4, 2013

I am very much impressed with his passionate work of writing papers even after receiving the surgery.

The present paper (actually published 2 years ago) deals with his life-work theme:
"To understand the world in a consistent manner, to realize the real basis of our human ways of living, and to establish a general and logical methodology for such a study."  He wrote this compact 8-page paper being addressed with such a very broad contents.

The overview of the present paper is illustrated nicely in the figure shown in the right.

As the basis of his logic, he builds the concepts of 'existing things' which can be perceived directly or indirectly (i.e., matters and ideas), and of their relationships (i.e., interrelations, interactions, and movements). And on such a basis he builds up the ways of describing the whole world, which contains technologies, institutions, and persons.

In the process of such a description/consideration, he finds the necessity of 'radical enumerative thinking' (i.e., a clearer extension of ordinary-said 'systematic thinking') and expressions of contradictions (i.e., a clear extension of the familiar term 'problems'). He also extends the logics of dialectics in a much wider meaning.

Using these logical methods, the author considers the basis of person's recognitions and actions and derives how the person decides them, with a range of consideration (i.e. granularity) and with a logic for solution (i.e., a thinking method). Then he discusses further basis of the person, i.e., the person's attitudes.

The width and depth of the author's consideration is indeed astonishing.

In 2009, Mr. Takahara used the title of 'TRIZ as the Way of Life?' in his presentation at Japan TRIZ Symposium. We could not understand his intention at all at that time. With the present paper, he shows his intention in a much clearer form. It is a really big framework of study!

In the Japanese page , the original paper is posted in PDF . The HTML version is a slight revision of the paper so as to clarify the section structure, without changing the texts. Presentation slides are also shown in PDF and in HTML .

English translation of the paper is not ready. I am encouraging the author to make this excellent work readable in English, too.   A brief Abstract in English is shown below.

  Abstract

A Note on a Method and Granularity in the Structure of the World

Toshio Takahara

Presented at FIT2013 (Forum on Information Technology),
held by IPSJ and IEICE, on Sept. 4, 2013, at Tottori University, Tottori City

Abstract

Human's living may be expressed by (a) the Way of living and (b) the chain of Recognitions and Actions coming out as the results of (a). The Way of living (a) is composed of the Attitude towards the reality of the World, the Modularity choice of thinking (or the width of consideration), and the Ways of thinking (or thinking methods).

In the overall model of the World, this paper examines the philosophy/concepts of ideals of Attitudes, Modularity choice, and the Ways of thinking. And the paper has found that all the three aspects of (a) should be derived by the dialectic thinking for addressing with the contradictions (or problems) and the radical enumerative thinking for managing the granularity of thinking, and also the interactions of such two thinking ways.
